Helping your child
with homework...

Homework is an important way of reinforcing your child’s learning experiences to gain a secure knowledge and understanding for further development.  Children in Key Stage 1 are expected to undertake 30 minutes of homework activities each week.

Homework for Key Stage 1 includes:

·       READING

Children are expected to do 10 minutes reading per day.  Children are encouraged to read a wide range of texts, so reading does not have to be specifically from their school reading book.  Parents are asked to make a brief comment in their child’s Reading Record giving some positive feedback of their child’s performance.  Areas for development can also be noted.  The Reading Record is also a way parents can communicate with the teacher if there is an issue either party wishes to raise, as these are checked frequently.

·       SPELLING

Children take part in daily phonics and spelling work during the Literacy hour, but it is important that children reinforce this knowledge through taking spellings home to learn.  Children can practise these using the ‘Look, Cover, Say, Write, Check method or alternative ways, which they may find easier depending on their learning style.  10 spellings based on phoneme blends are given each Friday, to be tested the following week.

Key Word Lists for Years R, 1 & 2 are contained in this pack for your reference.  It is important children practise reading and spelling these words.

·        FINDING OUT

From time to time, children may be asked to find out key information linked to topic work.  This aids children’s ability to use research tools such as the library, internet, encyclopaedias, speaking to family etc.

Helping your child
to write...

We hope all our children will become successful writers.  You can encourage your child to improve their writing by learning VCOP. It stands for Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, and Punctuation.  The children like to remember it by the mnemonic, Very Colourful Ostrich Poo!

V = VOCABULARY (OR WOW WORDS)

Use WOW words to make sentences more interesting…

E.g. She opened the mysterious door.

C = CONNECTIVES

Don’t use too many ‘ands’ – extend sentences using a variety of connectives (joining words e.g. but, so, because, also, although)…

E.g. She opened the mysterious door with trembling fingers.

O = OPENERS (OR ‘LY’ WORDS)

Make your sentence have more impact on the reader by starting it with and ‘ly’ word…

E.g. Slowly and carefully, she opened the mysterious door with trembling fingers.

P = PUNCTUATION

Experiment by using a variety of punctuation for effect…

E.g. Slowly and carefully, she opened the mysterious door with trembling fingers...
