Narrative Writing: Checklist

·       Start with speech or a question – engage the reader

·       Male and female characters – easy names

·       Start sentences with adverbs

·       Show that you can use speech – powerful speech verbs

·       Description – set the scene – pick a place that you know well

·       Short punchy sentences

·       Time of day – season …. Build the picture

·       Use similes – it flickered like lightning

·       Use metaphors – the man was a raging bull

·       Use personification – only the walls witnessed what happened on that day

·       Find different ways to start your sentences

·       Try not to repeat things !

·       Remember to read it through and check it from time to time ?

·       Use a range of long and short sentences

·       Commas ?

·       Exclamation marks ?

·       Parenthetic dashes ?

·       Semi colons ?

·       Try and end with an ironic twist !

 

Remember… It must have an ending !
